Greek railway and Chinese wind-powered vehicles from the 6th century A.D. Also: possible flying machines from Greece, Egypt and China. Machines Of The Gods Examining Greek and Roman technology designed for use in religious temples to create illusions that seemed miraculous. Included: an iron chariot that appeared to be suspended in mid air at the Temple of Serapis in Alexandria. Super Ships Extraordinary sailing vessels are examined, including the Khufu funeral ship in Egypt made entirely without metal nails; and a warship that could hold 7000 crewmen. Ancient Mega Machines Examining ancient machines used in the large-scale engineering projects of the ancient world, particularly in Greece and Egypt. Machines III Mechanical devices from ancient China are examined, including a device to collect star data, water-powered clocks and a hydraulic hammer. Also: a visit to an iron furnace; and an interview with clay expert Ye Hongming. Robots An examination of ancient robotics includes a look at the creations of Greek engineers Heron and Philon; and robotic devices in the Byzantine Empire. Also: a reconstruction of ancient inventions. Machines Of The East Examining the inventions of Arab engineer Al-Jazari, who lived in what is now modern Turkey in the 13th century, whose designs included a water clock and a variety of geared mechanisms. Included: a reconstruction of some of his inventions.
