Tony's Brush With Death
It's moving day at Chimp Eden. Four-year-old Tony and 7-year-old Sampa, who were rescued from Angola, are ready to leave quarantine and start the integration process with the other chimps. Both animals must to be darted and anesthetized for the move - Sampa needs a birth control implant and Tony must be thoroughly examined to assess a cataract and a mouth infection. Though darting may seem routine, it is always risky. When one of the chimps has a bad reaction, Eugene comes face to face with his worst nightmare.
Josephine Is The Name And Trouble Is The Game, Part 1
Some chimps have trouble written all over them. At the age of 13, Josephine is just such a chimp. The abuse from years in captivity has left her aggressive, mistrustful and possibly psychotic. Now, Josephine's integration into the adult enclosure has everyone at the sanctuary on edge. The last female introduced to the group met with violence and brutality. It might be worse for Josephine. Everything hinges on the actions of the alpha male, Abu. But as the introduction reaches a critical stage, Chimp Eden is rocked by a sudden, unexpected tragedy.
Josephine Is The Name And Trouble Is The Game, Part 2
The stunning demise of the adult group's alpha male, Abu, has thrown Chimp Eden into turmoil. The cause of death must be determined quickly. If Abu was infected with a contagious disease, then every chimp in the sanctuary is at risk. Amidst the uncertainty, Josephine's introduction must continue. But the dynamics of the adult group have shifted. Amadeus is now the undisputed alpha. Will he accept Josephine as Abu did? Or has Abu's death destroyed the momentum of the integration?
The Family Jao: Cheaper By The Dozen
The infant enclosure gets ready to welcome new members Tony and Sampa, swelling Jao's family to an even dozen. But the pending introduction worries both Eugene and Phillip. Sampa is the first mature female in the infant enclosure and the family's three grown males - Jao, Zac and Cozi - have never been around a "real woman" before. Her presence is certain to upset the group dynamics. Tony poses a different concern. He's a bit of a "runt," his eyesight is bad and he's lost most of his teeth. Can he survive the daily rough and tumble of the enclosure? Tony's future is clouded by uncertainty when Zac targets him for discipline.
A New Home For Suzie And Lily, Part 1
Eugene returns to Angola for another difficult mission. He's here to rescue two young females - 2-year-old Lily and 5-year-old Suzie. Lily is a happy, fairly healthy chimp, who has been at a safe house for five months waiting for Eugene to pick her up. Suzie, on the other hand, is a tragedy waiting to happen. She is confined to a cage at a beach resort, exposed to the elements and the bad behavior of unruly tourists. On top of everything else, Suzie has a mysterious infection that could derail the entire rescue.
A New Home For Suzie And Lily, Part 2
Eugene's journey to Angola to rescue 2-year-old Lily and 5-year-old Suzie is entering the crucial stage. But the mission seems jinxed, thanks to one problem after another. A sick chimp, delayed blood test results, a surprise escape and the language barrier add up to one big headache for Eugene. Can he get Suzie and Lily out of Angola and deliver them safely to South Africa, so they can start a new life at the sanctuary?
Josephine's Day Out
Josephine escapes from the adult enclosure, but fortunately stays nearby and takes refuge in the volunteers break room. A minute-by-minute chronicle of her latest adventure and her dramatic re-capture, as recounted by Eugene, Phillip and cameraman Willem van Heerden.
Zac, The Great Pretender
Jao has always been the undisputed alpha of the infant group. But at the age of 60, he often seems more interested in relaxing than in asserting his dominance. Now he faces a challenge for leadership of the family from the #2 male, Zac. Jao is wiser and more experienced - Zac is younger, bigger and stronger. A showdown is inevitable.
Seven Babies For A New Family, Part 1
Eugene returns to Sudan for his biggest rescue ever. This time, there are seven young chimps waiting to be picked up at the safe house. And if wrangling that many chimps all at once for feeding, blood testing and crating weren't enough, bureaucratic delays with test results and travel permits leave Eugene scrambling to salvage the mission. Finally, his frustration turns to fear when one of the babies suddenly disappears. Is a curious, young chimp simply testing his boundaries? Or has he been stolen by black market animal traders?
Seven Babies For A New Family, Part 2
As the Sudan rescue reaches its climax, Eugene finds himself in a race against the clock. He is struggling in the face of food shortages, bureaucratic snafus and an unruly gang of 7 baby chimps. And just when his problems with blood results and travel permits are solved, he is advised to leave the country as soon as possible, because of escalating political instability. Eugene crates the chimps and hurries to the airport, taking back roads as a precaution. On his last mission to Sudan, he was forced to leave two chimps behind. This time, he's determined to bring them all out safely.
Life In Quarantine
For every chimp at the sanctuary, quarantine is the end of one journey... and the beginning of another. At the moment, the facility is filled to overflowing with 10 new chimps. This is Chimp Eden's newest family group and they represent a perfect opportunity for Eugene to continue his hands on rehabilitation. Success depends on the group's alpha female - a 14-year-old named Martha, who had to leave a zoo in Ghana because she was aggressive to the other chimps. If Martha accepts Eugene as part of the family, he'll be able to join the chimps when they're released into their outdoor enclosure.
Chimp Eden Casanova
Twelve-year-old Nicky is one of Chimp Eden's original residents, a colorful chimp who is both a lover and fighter. He was expelled from the Johannesburg Zoo after he tangled with the zoo's ranking alpha male. The cause of it all? Nicky just couldn't stay away from the alpha's favorite females. Now, in a twist worthy of Hollywood, the primary object of Nicky's desires - a chimp named Claudette - is leaving the zoo and coming to live at the sanctuary. Will their storybook romance pick up where it left off? Or have the years apart turned Nicky into a fickle and forgetful lover?
Tony's Brighter Day
The saga of poor Tony continues. He's adjusted to the infant enclosure as well as can be expected and he's even formed a special bond with Cozi. But Eugene and Phillip know that Tony will always be at risk because of the cataract that has left him sightless in one eye. The only option is an unprecedented, delicate surgery to remove the cataract and implant a manufactured synthetic lens. If the operation fails, Tony's prospects for a normal life will be grim.
The Rise And Fall Of Gida
Like Zac, Gida spent years chained to a tree, exposed to the elements and human abuse. During the reign of Abu, the adult group's original alpha male, Gida held a special place in the family as Abu's favorite girl. But after Abu's death, Gida struggles for her place in the hierarchy, as two new females are introduced to the group. In the end, she is struck down by an unexpected illness. Is the culprit a mysterious virus, or a broken heart?
Moving Day For The Adults, Part 1
The adult group is becoming more like wild chimps every day, so after months of preparation it's time to move them to a bigger, less controlled enclosure. Will Eugene's plan to lure them into their new home actually work? Which chimps will adjust, which will freak out? This is a crucial step towards Eugene's long-term goal to return chimps to the wild.
Moving Day For The Adults, Part 2
As the adult group settles into their new home, Eugene and Phillip celebrate the success of the move. Then, a seemingly minor dust-up between Josephine and Jinga (as they are put in for the night) apparently sparks a major drama. Sometime after dark, a spooked Josephine escapes from the new sleeping quarters. But unlike her previous escapes, she doesn't stay close to the enclosure. She's now loose in the wilderness, with an 8-hour head start.
Growing Pains For The Infants
Jao's family is moved to the old adult enclosure, which offers more room to explore - and more chances for trouble. How will Jao and the others react to their new surroundings? Will Cozi be unsettled and start to regress? And how might the group dynamics be affected? Will Zac take the opportunity to try and unseat Jao, once and for all?
The Millennium Family
The new family leaves quarantine and is released into the now empty infant enclosure. It's the day Eugene has been waiting for since Jao rejected him several months ago. But his excitement about being able to work "hands on" again is tempered with worry. Once the new group has experienced the freedom of the enclosure, they may reject him as well.
The Human Alpha
Eugene's hands-on work with the new family group begins in earnest. In many ways, he is as much a chimp as the newcomers, who have only known captivity. Essentially, he must fill the role of alpha male - teaching them how to forage and climb and interact. Plans include constructing a nest platform and spending the night outside with the chimps.
Eugene Goes Wild
Eugene travels to Gombe National Park in Tanzania, where his patron Jane Goodall did her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees. This will be his first encounter with chimps in the wild. Eugene is startled by the differences between the sanctuary chimps and chimps who have never suffered at the hands of humans. But he also finds surprising similarities and gains valuable insight that will help him achieve his ultimate dream of setting once captive chimps free to live as they were meant to live.
