The Journey Begins
The competition begins when 30 drivers arrive to compete for 4 spots on Max Siegel's Revolution Racing Team. Follow a 17 year-old African American of Haitian decent who was adopted by white parents. His hope is to become the next Wendell Scott (the only African-American to ever win a Cup Race). Another driver just turned 16 years-old and is also African-American. His skills behind the wheel of a racecar have already caught the attention of Joe Gibbs racing. Then there's the wild child. When she was a teenager racing is what her parents say saved her life. Now she is determined to become the first female NASCAR driver. The drivers race against each other in Legend cars - two crashes and a spin out are just a few of the highlights. Later the drivers attend an actual Sprint Cup race where they meet superstars Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson. Max and his team are impressed with the level of talent and now must decide who will be eliminated.
Who Will Be In The Top 10?
A young man is still working desperately to earn a spot in order to recover financially from funding his own car all year. Also meet a 26 year-old single father in the competition, racing for his 11 month-old daughter. Learn about the relationship between a southern white team owner and his African-American driver. The drivers head to the racetrack for time trials. Some rise to the occasion while others sink to the bottom. There's a boardroom meeting after the time trial and of the 30 drivers, 14 are eliminated - leaving 16 drivers in the running. After the first round of cuts, the remaining 16 drivers head back to the track. Nerves get to some of them resulting in tears and shame. At some point an EMT is even required at center track. Six more drivers are asked to leave. In the end there is the top ten.
Back To Basics
The top ten drivers arrive at Revolution Racing. Some of them arrive with parents. After meeting the staff including their trainer Phil Horton, they move into their new home. The next day, the drivers have their first work out. From there they head over to race go-karts where tensions carry over from the track into the locker room. In addition to two days of go-kart racing we also learn that one of the drivers is out, but it isn't due to elimination. Separate from all the action behind the wheel, we get an intimate look at what happens outside the car by meeting the pit crew, the individuals responsible for keeping these cars running during races. They talk about the sacrifices and rewards of working on the pit crew. In the boardroom, the remaining nine drivers are discussed and all nine continue on.
First Elimination
The competition is getting heated and the drivers are beginning to size each other up. The drivers have another tough workout in the gym before racing legend cars and we catch up with the pit crew again. After more driving on the track there is another boardroom meeting where a tough decision is made. One driver is eliminated leaving eight left in the competition.
Competition Heats Up
In this episode continue to track pre-existing personal stories with the drivers. The day starts off with a workout with Coach Phil. After working out all morning the drivers are tested on their knowledge of the cars with drive instructors Andy and Blair. The next day's weather calls for rain so racing is delayed. Blair has one-on-one conversations with the drivers and as the weather clears up its back to the track for head to head racing. At the end of the day a boardroom meeting determines that another driver must be eliminated. There are now seven remaining in the competition.
Pit Crew Training
The drivers meet up with Coach Phil for a crash course in pitting the cars. We learn how dangerous this maneuver is with a couple close calls. The pit crew sticks around to have a little competition of their own. Workouts this time are a little different as Phil takes the drivers to an Olympic training center for some running and then it's back to the track. At the end of the day someone else must go home. Now with only six drivers left, everyone is focused on giving it all they have in these last few days of the competition.
