He then crosses paths with Vignette as the threat of The Pact looms, and the two find themselves in an unexpected romance. When his old professor turns up dead, Philo agrees to take on the case. Imogen aids her brother. Later, Vignette plunges deeper into the Black Raven. Philo relies on a Haruspex to unlock evidence about his suspect. Vignette forms a deeper bond with her new family as Jonah's parents tighten their control on him upon his return home. Philo begins to make clearer connections in his investigations. Meanwhile, Vignette finds comfort somewhere unexpected. Later, Jonah disobeys his parents' orders and sneaks out for a meeting with someone unsavory. Philo finds himself at the heart of a firestorm after keeping his evidence from his colleagues. As a result, he is imprisoned on the charge of being the true murder suspect. However, he receives some unlikely assistance from behind bars. Philo comes face-to-face with sinister forces as the neighborhood becomes embroiled in conflict.
