Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
Few bands today recapture the energy and sound of the original soul movement like Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. When it comes to inspiration, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings look to a good meal to fill their souls. No matter what town these road warriors pull into, their first priority is to hit up one of their favorite spots for a meat inspired feast. Whether it's duck breast in Paris, lamb shanks in Berlin or pulled pork in Bastrop, Texas, these carnivores love filling up on delectable local dishes. Restaurants, however, are not the only places the band looks forward to eating on the road. Legend has it that if the night is long enough and the mood is just right, the Dap Kings can swing by Sharon's hotel room for a late night treat. Usually armed only with a kitchenette, she has been known to serve up succulent steaks and sides for her adoring band. In honor of their late snacks, Sam will be cooking up Sharon Steaks and The Dap Rings. To compliment the meal, Sam will be whipping up his When I Come Home Martini.
Final Fantasy
Toronto based violin virtuoso and performer Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallet) has been studying classical violin since he was a toddler and composed his first piece at age thirteen. For Owen, the most important part of touring is immersing himself into the local scene by enjoying their cultures, arts and, of course, food. This was not always easy since he was a practicing vegan until one fateful dinner in the UK six years ago. As legend has it, Owen found himself in a culinary wasteland, starving and with no meat free options. Although he had been Vegan for years, he still carried a love for meat deep inside him. With no other options, Owen was presented with a delicious lamb and he tucked into one of the best meals of his life. Although he still keeps a vegan kitchen at home, Owen enjoys carnivorous delights when he dines out. Together, Sam and Owen will cook up This Lamb Sells Razor Clam Ragu in honor of his UK meal. To wash it all he will be serving up his take on the Blue Moon Perfect Pour, the Mason Moon.
Les Savy Fav
Prototype punk rockers, Les Savy Fav, have been defining the "Do-It-Yourself" punk scene since 1995. During their days on the road, one meal continued to elude Les Savy Fav, year after year, tour after tour. Legend had it that the best Jerk Chicken in the country was served only on Sunday nights in Baltimore. Despite careful planning and much anguish, the band could never plan their Baltimore stop on the right night or bring themselves to cancel a date in a different city. Unfortunately the restaurant closed down before the band ever had a chance to tastes its wares. In honor of their loss, Sam will be cooking Les Savy Pheasant (Jerk Pheasant) with a side order of Mason Mofongo (fried green plantains or fried yuca, seasoned with garlic, olive oil and pork cracklings, then mashed). To wash it all down, Sam will be whipping up his Je T'aime Punch (Mai Tai).
Men
New York Times approved icon of "nerdy cool", JD Samson, has been a major force in the alternative Electro scene since joining the critically acclaimed band, Le Tigre, in 2000. In 2007, JD and fellow bandmate, Johanna Fateman, expanded their musical talents and formed the DJ/production/remix team currently known as MEN. Being a band on the go like MEN, doesn't always mean there is time for a sit down meal. Sometimes the only meal is a fast one, but the band never lets quickness effect culinary excellence. Many tours start with a quick stop below Canal street to pick up some of their favorite Chinese delicacies. Whether it is pan-fried veggie dumplings, succulently sweet pork ribs or exceedingly crispy Peking duck, MEN knows how to chow on the fly. While these dishes sit at the top of the of their culinary preferences, no dish is more sought after then the savory, meat filled bun. These brioche styled buns are packed full of slow roasted, velvety bites of meat and sauteed onions. As a nod to the band's preferred road food, Sam will be baking up a gaggle of Boom Boom Boom Buns and pairing them with Long Island Thai Iced Tea.
Kid Sister And Flosstradamus
Combining their love for witty raps and ferocious beats, Chicago heroes and Fool's Gold (Kanye West's DJ A-Track's label) superstars, rapper Kid Sister & DJ duo Flosstradamus, are currently one of the hottest acts in hip-hop today. For Kid Sister, eating healthy is not just a choice, it is a way of life. Over the last few years she has admitted dropping down from two-hundred and fifteen pounds to a svelte one-hundred and thirty five. Every meal she eats, every piece of food she puts in her body, is thought out and planned. Her strict dietary coder, however, does not restrict her from enjoying the full flavors of life. Fresh vegetables, spicy condiments and a love for international cuisine keep Kid Sister's meals exciting and new. In addition to backing her on stage, Flosstradamus backs her at the table, helping keep the menu choices healthy and fresh. In recognition of the trio's healthful habits, Sam will cook up a low fat Can I Kick It Curry (Butternut Squash Curry) along with Control Couscous, seasoned with white chocolate. He will be pairing the Curry with his Rooi Moer, a Rooibos infused Gin mixed with Apricot liquor, Chenin Blanc and Lemon.
Yacht
For the casual fan, Portland's YACHT might seem like just a band, but for Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, the group's two members, it is a genre-and-media-spanning life project. When it comes to eating, YACHT believes incorporating what they eat and cook into their life mission. As staunch vegans (meaning they consume no animal byproduct), Jona and Claire experiment non-stop in their culinary laboratory. Common dishes like chicken picado, sausage & eggs and sauteed halibut are transferred to karma free, gastronomic delicacies like seitan picado, tofu scamble and buttery, sauteed eggplant. Their flavorful and delectable dishes defy all dull stereotypes about vegan cooking. To help add another dish to their meatless repertoire, Sam will cook up Pyschic City (Chicken of the Woods Mushroom) Picado and Summer Bok choy. To wash it down, he will stir up his Lovage Sour, a Lovage infused grain alcohol with vermouth and gin.
