Adam must carefully navigate not hurting Beverly's feelings as his relationship with Dana progresses. Meanwhile, Barry gets a fake ID, but after showing it off to the entire school, it's confiscated, and Barry needs to make good on some promises he made to his classmates. Adam's desire to be the lead in the school musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar," goes unfulfilled when he's cast in something other than the leading role. Insistent her son is a star, Beverly casts Adam in a rival show, but when he becomes too self-obsessed for the rest of the cast, Beverly makes a drastic decision. Meanwhile, Murray's disdain for traffic results in leaving every sporting event early much to Barry's dismay, including a Flyers game that ends with an unprecedented event. With Prince Charles and Lady Di's wedding approaching, Beverly gets the idea for her and Murray to renew their vows. But with Murray's complete lack of interest, will Beverly lose her chance at a second wedding? Meanwhile, Barry hopes his and Adam's garage band will get Erica's best friend, Lainey, to notice him again. Adam inadvertently gets Barry kicked out of the cool group of friends at school and must come up with a plan to get his brother back in. Adam convinces Barry and his friends he has the skills to hack into the school computer system to change their grades, but does he? Later, Beverly is immediately jealous when she learns Erica hangs out with a friend's cooler mom and sets out to show Erica she can be cool too. When Pops accidentally starts a fire in his apartment during a Halloween party, he's evicted and Beverly invites him to move into the Goldbergs' home. Pops' wild lifestyle is soon too much for the family to handle and they decide to look into other options. Meanwhile, Barry stops Erica from eating Pop Rocks candy with soda, since according to urban legend, the combination would kill her. Since he saves her, Barry wants something in return from Erica. When Mr. Meller singles out Adam during a game of Dodgeball, Beverly intervenes to protect Adam and gets Meller fired. But soon, Murray and Adam see him in a new light, so Beverly tries to get his job back... will she succeed? Meanwhile, Barry can't accept Erica is better than him in a new board game... Trivial Pursuit. As a bet, Beverly challenges Erica to participate in Jazzercise after she thinks her mom's obsession is lame. When she wins, Erica decides to opt out of celebrating Thanksgiving so Beverly must find a way to win her daughter back to celebrate the holiday with the family. Meanwhile, uncle Marvin shows up for his annual visit to the Goldberg home and unexpectedly bonds with Adam, which annoys Murray. Adam breaks his arm and exaggerates at school that he fell off of a hover board just like in the "Back to the Future" movie. But the lie threatens his friendship with Emmy Mirsky. Meanwhile, the family falls in love with the new Chinese restaurant in town and Beverly fears she's being replaced in the kitchen. When Barry is approached by a modeling representative in the mall, Barry is convinced he'll be famous but Erica believes it's a scam so Beverly threatens the modeling rep to give him a gig or else. Later, Adam runs into his Pop Pop, Murray's grumpy dad, and thinks he can help mend the fences between estranged father and son. After falling boxes trap Murray in the garage, he demands Beverly get rid of everything except for one trunk. When the trunk goes missing, Murray becomes sentimental about what was inside while Erica has trouble parting with her New Kids on the Block memorabilia. Learning of their sister's former obsession, Adam and Barry tease Erica to a new level resulting in a surprising turn for the brothers. As the Sadie Hawkins dance approaches, Erica asks Beverly to help her find Barry a date to keep him away from Lainey. But Beverly comes up with a girl that shocks everyone. Meanwhile, Adam gets into a fight with his best friend... Pops. Barry must decide between love and football after discovering that Lainey's father does not root for the Eagles; at the same time, Beverly has a hard time dealing with the deep feelings Adam shows for Dana. Murray takes Erica's car privileges away, which leads her to retaliate by going halfsies with Barry on a shabby used black van that they end up living in much to the despair of Beverly. Meanwhile, Adam doesn't take kindly to being voted "nicest guy" in the school yearbook. Barry fakes being sick in order to have an epic adventure like the one in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, except things don't go as planned and turn from bad to worse when Pops and Adam get involved. Dana and Adam are given a doll to parent for a school project, but end up in jeopardy of failing because of Beverly's "grand-smothering." Meanwhile, Erica tries to get back at Barry for monopolizing her best friend's time by joining the JTP, however her plan doesn't go as expected. Adam attends a Phillies game with his dad and ends up lost in the stadium after Murray allows him to leave his seat on his own. Elsewhere, Beverly's guilt trip backfires when Erica and Barry drive off without her during an argument on their way home from the mall. Erica plans for her future after high school, deciding to pursue her dream of becoming a singer and putting college on hold, which leads her parents to worry. Meanwhile, an April Fools' Day joke leads to an all-out war between Adam and Barry. Beverly plans a birthday sleepover for Adam, but things go awry when a friend brings his dad's home-brewed beer and gets everyone sick. Meanwhile, Murray promises Erica and Barry a new CD player on the condition that they write the greatest song ever. Beverly arranges for Adam's teacher to tutor him in Spanish, a class she can't believe he's failing; at the same time, Barry gets a job delivering pizzas to impress Murray, but meanwhile, Erica is upset that her father hasn't acknowledged the fact that she has been working throughout her teen years. Erica throws her support behind Walter Mondale in 1984's presidential election and tries to get Beverly to vote with her, but to no avail. Meanwhile, Barry is determined to get on an athletic game show to prove his prowess after losing a wrestling match. Murray's joy over Adam wanting to play a sport is short-lived once he discovers that it's fencing, and worse yet, he was inspired by a scene from The Princess Bride. Meanwhile, things don't go exactly as planned when Beverly tries to make a love connection between Barry's wrestling coach and Erica's voice teacher. Adam, thinking Pop's good luck might rub off on him, takes a gamble and ends up losing his beloved toys. Meanwhile, Erica's dream of appearing on a popular TV dance show turns into a nightmare when Barry gives her pink eye. Adam and Beverly decide that Erica should make a music video to go along with her application to Juilliard, but the finished product doesn't turn out as expected. Meanwhile, Murray builds a stronger friendship with Lainey's father. Beverly and Murray prepare to say farewell to Erica for the summer after she's accepted to a 10-week arts program; and Barry takes the risky job of school mascot to be closer to Lainey.
