The White Box Challenge
Season 5 begins as the competition moves back to New York. During the first challenge, the 12 hopefuls create white-box bedrooms inspired by the personality of another designer. They must obtain supplies at an Asian market with just $500.
Fashion Forward Room Design
The contestants attend a fashion show to gain inspiration for a room design before being split into teams for the challenge.
Symphony In The Name Of Design
The teams create outdoor patios inspired by music, with each designer selecting one instrument upon which to base his or her contribution to the overall design.
Flower Power
The designers contribute individual flowers to a team bouquet, which is then used as the inspiration for a studio-space design. During the challenge, one team makes a big blunder, while a dominant personality emerges in the other.
New York's Finest Makeovers
The teams design spaces in New York City fire stations. In order to gain inspiration, the contestants go through firefighter training, including spending time in fire simulators.
Getting Trumped
The designers create model apartments inspired by New York City souvenirs for a Trump property. After the spaces are complete, Donald Trump Jr. visits each one, and the judges make their decision.
Sears Catalog Kitchen Challenge
The teams design model kitchens to be featured in a catalog highlighting the appliances. After creating the spaces inspired by different regions of the world, the teams work with a photographer to choose the best shot. John Gidding is a guest judge.
Too Many Cooks In The Kitchen Challenge
Chef Aaron Sanchez prepares dishes for the remaining four designers, who learn they'll have to create dining rooms inspired by their meals. The designs are limited to repurposed items, and each space is filled with old furniture and accessories at the start.
The Glass House Challenge
Season 4 winner Antonio Ballatore visits the final three designers to offer advice and inspiration before the group begin work on their next challenge: building glass houses expressing individual style in New York's Foley Square. After the challenge, the contestants also tape host presentations before the next elimination.
Lights, Camera, Action!
The winner is chosen after the final two create TV-show presentations with help from the eliminated contestants.
