Hero
Steve reluctantly agrees to house sit for Onno and ends up starting a fire that he later claims to have stopped. Steve gets caught up in being praised as a hero by his daughter and his neighbors, until his conscience gets the better of him.
Project Run Away
Steve rebels against competition in the suburbs and challenges Courtney's teacher over her expectations for an assignment that clearly requires significant parental help. After agreeing to make amends for an inappropriate late night e-mail, Steve's parenting skills are called into question and it's Anne who comes to his defense. Meanwhile, Henry attempts to discover who fathered Rhonda's children.
DMV
Steve's plan for using Monica's scooter to bypass the line at the DMV backfires. Meanwhile, when Onno asks Anne to take Jenna to the gynecologist, Anne put in a compromising position when Jenna asks her not to disclose the true reason for the visit.
40 Days
Steve and Anne attempt to increase intimacy in their marriage by having 40 days of sex, as instructed in a popular relationship book, but the plan backfires when things get too intimate for Steve. Meanwhile, Courtney loses an important item given to her by Jenna.
Burn Bougainvillea, Burn
As Steve and Anne get to know their new neighbors, things aren't as friendly as they seem when the new neighbor wants to cut down Anne's prized bougainvillea. Meanwhile, Henry is enamored with the teen-aged girl down the street, who just became pregnant for the second time.
If The Shoe Fits, Steal It
Steve falsely accuses the mother of Courtney's classmate of stealing Courtney's shoes. When it's demonstrated that Courtney has her name on the bottom of her footwear, Steve is forced to prove he shows an interest in his kids. Meanwhile, Henry hides his SAT scores from his mom and turns to Steve for help.
Dirty Stevie
Steve enjoys the power that comes along with a handgun that Onno gives the Pattersons. Anne wants the gun out of the house, but when Steve "lays down the law" with Henry, she sees Steve in a whole new "macho" way. Meanwhile, Anne deals with Monica after she sends over a bill to cover the food Henry has been eating at her house.
The Game Of Life
Anne's suggestion to start a "family game night" has as its goal to help convince Henry to go to college. But she doesn't realize the family is experiencing financial issues until she hears from Steve who is anxious about being a father, husband and provider - as he confronts his feelings about the economy and the family's own finances.
Nothing For Money
Steve suffers the consequences when he encourages Anne to stop doing charity and volunteer work and get a job. When he takes over Anne's former responsibilities as a stay-at-home mom, taking up her old chores and helping out at Courtney's art class, Steve begins to understand how much Anne does. Meanwhile, Henry puts his friendship with Jenna in jeopardy when he accuses her of stealing something from their living room.
School Council
Steve and Anne use the "talking stick" method recommended by Courtney's teacher to discuss an altercation between their daughter and a neighbor's girl. But during a mediation at which Steve wonders why adults need school teachers to resolve their conflicts -- he ends up learning something unexpected about his relationship with Henry.
Three End Tables
When an end table ordered by the Pattersons is delivered to a neighbor's house by mistake, Anne encourages Steve to talk to the neighbor about it. But Steve, looking to avoid any possible conflict with the neighbor, comes up with a plan (even using a black eye) to dupe Anne into thinking he retrieved their table. Meanwhile, Henry jeopardizes Courtney's relationship with Jenna after he sends her over to break up a date.
Desperate Housewife
When Steve admits that a neighbor going through a divorce flirted with him, Anne is forced to examine the strength of her marriage. Also, Courtney and Henry struggle for control of the downstairs television.
No Reception
Steve motivates Anne to break away from her manipulative mother after her parents abuse the new cell phones they gave them. And, Dr. Jim counsels Henry after he reprimands Rhonda for glamorizing teen pregnancy in front of Courtney.
