The Debarge Family
Through interviews with members of the original group, family, friends and colleagues Unsung will chronicle the rise and fall of Debarge, arguably Motown's most successful group of the 1980s. From their deep roots in their mother's Pentecostal church, to their signing with the fabled Motown label as Berry Gordy's unabashed reincarnation of the Jacksons, and their subsequent descent into sibling rivalry and drug abuse that ultimately led to their break-up, we'll re-discover this immensely talented family whose influence still resonates in the music of artists as varied as Babyface Edmonds, P. Diddy, Mary J. Blige and Ashanti.
Phyllis Hyman
She was called the "Goddess of Love" and her sultry and passionate vocal styling of Jazz, Blues and R&B standards and originals made her the quintessential songstress. Unsung looks at Phyllis Hyman's extraordinary life from her childhood and her awareness of her vocal talents; to her big break in the mid-70's by respected composer, Norman Connors; to her 20-year recording career filled with chart-topping R&B hits. Also explored in this episode are Hyman's personal struggles - her search for self-esteem, unconditional love and professional respect - which lead to her untimely and shocking death in 1995 by suicide. Phyllis Hyman's story will be told by those who knew her best - family, friends, former band members, vocalists and industry professionals.
The Clark Sisters
Dynamic, ground-breaking, inspirational, and one of the most influential gospel groups of all time, the Clark Sisters were forged in the Pentecostal heat of their mother's fervent devotion to God, and her insistence on the perfect musical expression of her faith. Mattie Moss Clark changed the sound of church music and trained her daughters to sing, write and create in the glory of God. When Twinkie Clark heard the music of Stevie Wonder, she found her greatest earthbound inspiration, and wrote songs for The Clark Sisters that moved not just the faithful, but mainstream audiences as well. The sisters had a big dance-club hit with You Brought the Sunshine, but their 'secular' success caused strains that threatened to pull the family apart. Ultimately, the Clark Sisters reunited in 2006 to record the album Live??? One Last Time. The songs and performances were a triumph, and earned the sisters three Grammys.
Donny Hathaway
Unsung explores the musical life and tragic demise of Donny Hathaway. They'll follow his life from gifted prodigy - a gospel singer at age ten - to pop songwriter and hit maker, notably through memorable duets with Roberta Flack, only to have superstardom and immense celebrity pass him by - subverted, ironically, by his own obsessive perfectionism. Fellow artists reflect on the kind of respect and admiration Hathaway's music engendered, his rise and fall in the music business, and some of his lesser known accomplishments, including feature-film scoring via a connection with Quincy Jones.
