Elsewhere, the group search for a missing person. Rick possibly stumbles upon another safe spot while attempting to come to the aid of someone in danger. Meanwhile, Shane heads off on a mission for much-needed medical supplies. The group await Shane's return, unaware that he's trapped in a school surrounded by zombies; Daryl and Andrea scour the woods for a missing person. Shane's deadly sacrifice leads to strange behavior, while the rest of the group contemplate the fine line between living and dying. While searching the woods for clues, Daryl is seriously injured and set upon by walkers. Meanwhile, Rick second-guesses himself; and Glenn believes he's getting positive signals from Maggie, but then isn't so sure. Glenn becomes the keeper of a pair of secrets; Andrea develops a new skill and is forced to rely on it during a life-or-death confrontation; Rick uncovers a secret about someone close to him. A grave threat rears its head from a surprise source; Rick and Hershel work together to avoid a dire situation; and Dale has it out with Shane. n the aftermath of a horrific discovery, Rick must restore order. Meanwhile, Hershel falls back into a bad habit and disappears, leaving Glenn and Rick to track him down in town. Rick, Glenn and Hershel find themselves trapped and facing a battle for survival against a new army of foes, both dead and alive; Lori encounters danger on the road and Shane attempts to rescue her and return her to the farm. The appearance of an outsider puts Rick and Shane at odds; Hershel's youngest daughter faces a momentous decision and Andrea steps in to help. When Rick and Shane agree on a pivotal decision, Dale begins to suspect a lack of humanity fostering among the group. Meanwhile, Carl's actions have an unexpected impact. Someone (or something) wicked is prowling around the farm, so Rick, Shane, Daryl and Glenn set up a patrol in the area as night falls. Rick and Carl make it out of the woods but find chaos on the farm, where the group has been split up and people are questioning Rick's leadership abilities.
